College Magazine Analysis
This is a
front cover of a college magazine. The magazine uses three specific colours
red, blue and black. The women on the picture is also wearing colours that are
the same used for the text on the magazine. She is wearing a red and white top
which looks like perhaps the college football team shirt and blue denim shorts,
which fit in with the blue in the colour theme. The woman’s makeup is a neutral
look, not a lot of eye makeup, lipstick or foundation this is giving off an
overall natural look about her.

The shot of
the woman is a medium shot where you are just able to see from up from her
legs. It is also focused on her in the foreground, making the background
blurry. The font on the front cover is all the same style just either in bold
or different colours. Most college bouncers and leaflets have pictures on with
the student/students outside on a warm sunny day with a great big smile on
their face. This portrays that the college is a happy and healthy environment
and that everyone should go there. The magazine its self has various headlines
such as ‘Tucker Max, He Better Hope They Serve Beer in Hell’ and ‘A New Kind Of
Balancing Act’ are just two headlines that would appeal to the students and
make them want to actually read the college magazine. For example the headline ‘Tucker
Max, He Better Hope They Serve Beer in Hell’ entices people because it’s an
interview with someone everyone knows, someone who is perhaps head boy of team
captain? By having this in the magazine people would want to read it to find
out want he has said and would aspire to be like him. The other headline
example I have talked about is the Campus of the college. This most likely is
talking about the campus on the college a map and areas to go and study etc.
All of the headlines are enticing to college students as they are informative
and funny articles to read. Because of this students are more likely to carry
on reading the college magazine more than once. Just like other magazines the
barcode is located at the bottom and to one side of the magazine. In this case
the bottom right hand corner, with the price in a blue box to match some of the
article titles.
Summary of Questionnaire Results
In my questionnaire I interviewed thirty people and put the
results into various different graphs. The first question I asked was; are you
male or female. Twenty of the thirty people I interviews were female and the
other ten were male. The second question I asked was; would you read a college
magazine. Twenty-three people said yes they would and seven people said they
wouldn’t.
The next question was what content would you like to see in
the magazine. Each person was allowed to choose three options in total. Eleven
people said they would like to see film releases in the magazine, nine people
said they would like to see fashion in the magazine, nine also said they would
like to see celeb gossip in the magazine. However only one person wanted to
hobbies and clubs in the magazine, compared to three wanting to see a ‘what’s
on’ section in the magazine. Two people wanted to see a jobs page in the
magazine, five people wanted to see Universities and seven people wanted to see
gigs on around the area. Eight people wanted technology in the magazine, two
people wanted sports in the magazine and fourteen people wanted food to feature
in the magazine. Compared to two people wanting gaming, nine people wanting a
problem page and five people wanting music in the magazine. However only one
person wanted study resources and only two people wanted college performances
in the magazine.
The fourth question I asked people was how much would you
pay. Fourteen people said nothing, twelve people said 50p, four people said a
£1 but no one would pay over a £1 for the magazine. The fifth question I asked
was would you prefer an emailed version or paper version. Seven people said
they would prefer and emailed version and twenty-three said they would still
prefer a paper version of the magazine.
I then went on to ask how often would you like a magazine. Five
people said weekly, six people said fortnightly, fifth-teen people said
monthly, two people said every half term and two people also said every term.
The next question I asked was what three colours would you like to see as a colour
theme for the magazine. Twenty people said red; thirteen people said blue and six
people said yellow. Compared to three people choosing orange, three people
choosing pink and also three people choosing green. However nineteen people
chose gold, two people chose black and nineteen people chose white.
The eighth question I asked was would you want discounts in
the magazine for food, the cinema and freebies and all thirty said they would
want discounts and offers. I then asked want image would you like to see on the
front cover fourteen people said they would like to see an image of students on
the front cover. Compared to sixteen people wanting to see a picture of food on
the front cover of the magazine.
