Summary of Questionnaire Results

In my questionnaire I interviewed thirty people and put the results into various different graphs. The first question I asked was; are you male or female. Twenty of the thirty people I interviews were female and the other ten were male. The second question I asked was; would you read a college magazine. Twenty-three people said yes they would and seven people said they wouldn’t.

The next question was what content would you like to see in the magazine. Each person was allowed to choose three options in total. Eleven people said they would like to see film releases in the magazine, nine people said they would like to see fashion in the magazine, nine also said they would like to see celeb gossip in the magazine. However only one person wanted to hobbies and clubs in the magazine, compared to three wanting to see a ‘what’s on’ section in the magazine. Two people wanted to see a jobs page in the magazine, five people wanted to see Universities and seven people wanted to see gigs on around the area. Eight people wanted technology in the magazine, two people wanted sports in the magazine and fourteen people wanted food to feature in the magazine. Compared to two people wanting gaming, nine people wanting a problem page and five people wanting music in the magazine. However only one person wanted study resources and only two people wanted college performances in the magazine.

The fourth question I asked people was how much would you pay. Fourteen people said nothing, twelve people said 50p, four people said a £1 but no one would pay over a £1 for the magazine. The fifth question I asked was would you prefer an emailed version or paper version. Seven people said they would prefer and emailed version and twenty-three said they would still prefer a paper version of the magazine.

I then went on to ask how often would you like a magazine. Five people said weekly, six people said fortnightly, fifth-teen people said monthly, two people said every half term and two people also said every term. The next question I asked was what three colours would you like to see as a colour theme for the magazine. Twenty people said red; thirteen people said blue and six people said yellow. Compared to three people choosing orange, three people choosing pink and also three people choosing green. However nineteen people chose gold, two people chose black and nineteen people chose white.

The eighth question I asked was would you want discounts in the magazine for food, the cinema and freebies and all thirty said they would want discounts and offers. I then asked want image would you like to see on the front cover fourteen people said they would like to see an image of students on the front cover. Compared to sixteen people wanting to see a picture of food on the front cover of the magazine.

Rejected Ideas - Feature Article

The photo above is a rejected idea that I created but I decided to change the layout and the background photo as I felt it was not appealing to my target audience. I chose a different picture for the background for the feature article because the original photo I chose was one I felt didn't suit the brand identity of my magazine. The photo of this rejected idea above has less colours within the photo and the lighting of the photo does not look as natural as the photo I have chosen for my feature article. I also changed the layout of the feature article because the new layout allows me to fit more of an interview on the feature page. Overall the reason I changed the feature page is because it didn't appeal to the target audience and that it helps represent my brand identity.

Rejected Ideas - Front Cover

For my front cover of my magazine I have made small changes through-out the designing of it to create a brand identity and appeal to my target audience. I have changed the masthead several times before I found the right font I wanted to use on my front cover as well as how it is laid out. I changed the font because originally it was a less noticeable font whereas now the masthead stands out from the font cover which is what creates the brand identity. I also changed the position of the feature article cover line, moving it from the right hand side to the bottom left where it can be seen more. I then changed the font of the feature article cover line because the old font was unclear and you were unable to read it. I have changed the font to a similar sefi font of the masthead as well as put effects on the text such as a drop shadow. I decided to get rid of the colour boxes which have text in them because I felt that they made the magazine in my opinion unprofessional and less appealing. In my finished design I have included much more cover lines on the front cover to fill unnecessary gaps that were there and make the magazine look more like a magazine.

Rejected Ideas - Contents Page

I have rejected this idea for my magazine because I felt that the colours of the contents page do not co-ordinate with the rest of the magazine. I felt that if I changed the colours and the layout then the contents page would fit in with the magazine. I had also decided to change the font for the contents because I also felt that there were too many different fonts within the magazine therefore I have change the font to one that I have used on the front cover of the magazine. I have also included more photos on my contents page because similar to convention contents page have a few photos to show what else is included in the magazine this is why I decided to have more photos on my contents page. On my contents page I also have used my space more wisely so that I can fit more onto the contents page and make it more appealing to my target audience.

Props & Location Report

I have varied where I have taken my magazine photos the main photos on the front, cover contents page and my feature article have all been taken outside. The front cover image was taken at a converted barn of one of my friend’s house. I decided to use this to my advantage because by having a greenery background and my model leaning against the back wall of the barn; it looks more professional rather than just having a green background. My contents page photo was taken in an area of woodlands not far from the location of the barn. Although you cannot see much of the woods in the background, you can see some of the woods which adds to the country outdoor affect. However my feature article photo of my model sitting on a motor bike is taken at the end of a housing estate road that overlooks a farmer’s field. My model is positioned on the bike with her back to the field, facing towards the sun in order for sun to light up her face whilst setting and giving off an orange/yellow colour.
The photos I have chosen for my contents page are one of my model in a music recording studio. I have chosen a different setting for my photo on the contents page so that it gives a variety of not only background but clothes as well. In my photos for my cover my model is in nice country clothing specially selected for the photo shoot whereas the clothes she is in when in the recording studio are more casually this is to portray her working in a comfortable environment in her everyday clothing to give more a variety to my pictures. Another photo I have used are one of a male model with a white cowboy hat with the sky as the background. This was also chosen so that there is more variety of models within the magazine that contrasts. This photo is associated with the article ‘WIN A chance to meet Jason Aldean’ (who the male model is in the photo)
I have also used another two picture one of my originally female model in a country shirt that was taken from the main photo shoot showing some insight into the photo shoot and to appeal to my target audience and readers. The other photo is of a guitar that was taken a low angle giving a variety of the different angles I used whilst taking photos. The photo of the guitar is associated with the competition of winning a signed guitar by a country band.
The props I used for my front cover picture were the clothes she is wear which are dark blue denim jeans, a patch work red top and a blue with red collar and cuffs denim jacket and she is also wearing glasses. My contents page image a medium close up of my model wearing a dark navy and red patterned top as well as her glasses. My feature article has the most props over all three main images. My model is wearing a red floral dress, the same denim jacket as she is wearing on the font cover and brown cowboy boots from Texas. She is also wearing sterling silver jewellery rings and a bracelet and her glasses. My model is also wearing a black cowboy hat whilst sitting on a Harley Davidson sportster, 98 plate, 95th anniversary limited edition.

My model used all of these props because they represent my genre and target audience and to add some variety and difference to my magazine and show other parts of country music.
